Memory #19: My 1st Apartment

One of my favorite things about this blog is that I promised myself from the beginning to experiment with different styles. I never ever start with color - always with line. This time I swapped my process. Flat colors and lots of mess. :) I'd call it more of a color "study" than anything...

This is my first apartment doorway as best as I can remember it from memory. The characteristic awning was actually a horrific green color that, ironically, looked better as brown in this picture. That's also supposed to be me, though, I can promise you that my outfits were never this cool in college and I definitely did not have an ipod yet because they hadn't even been invented. Imagine that!

During my 20's I moved 5 times.

I'm going to dedicate my next few posts to my beloved, humble abodes of the past 10 years. There's no place more meaningful than a home if you ask me...

  1. Love it, Renee! It feels very much like "layers of color". It also feels like a scene captured at dusk where somebody has just pulled up in the parking lot with lights still on, illuminating you on the stoop...

  4. I really love this style, Renee-I've been starting to focus on color/shape over line too and it's refreshing, isn't it? I really love the mood of this piece. Super cozy!

  6. best part was the view from your bedroom into the blanchards parking lot where we got a birds eye view of all the drunken fights...that and the roof access :)

  8. I really love this Renee! Especially the bricks with those blips of green in front and her your super cool pose with the iPod wires that add just the right touch!

I often start with a color palette as an inspiration, but I love your approach of laying in color first. I may need to do some more experimenting myself. :)

  9. Love it! Brings back a lot of memories. The roof was the best part, definitely. The ass-freezing cold ex-porch bedrooms, not so much. :)

  11. Wowie, you guys! I have been away for a little while and just noticed all your comments. Thank you so much, I look forward to making more of these :)

Another amusing tale of 43 ParkVale...the amount of times the fire alarm went off early in the AM. All in all, it was a pretty great first apartment :) And I had some awesome roomies.
